Margaret A. Elliott Scholarship
The Margaret A. Elliott Scholarship was established by Dr. Virginia Roeder Wenger in memory of the longtime English professor at OCW. The award goes to a junior or senior who is outstanding in English and/or British literature and poetry.
In creating the award, Wenger said, “Mrs. Elliott was a truly memorable teacher and I remember her so fondly for her poetry quotation on the blackboard each day, the daily flower or small bouquet on her desk, her grading of essays from 1 to 30 or however many were in the class and her love for the English language and literature.”
Wenger noted that Mrs. Elliott’s instruction in writing enabled her to be “successful as a columnist for the Baltimore Evening Sun for 23 years (3 columns a week). When Mrs. Elliott retired, she sent me her library of books of British poetry that I have cherished over the years.”
Elliott lived in Pacific Grove, California when she passed away in 1987 at the age of 95. She was born in New York City and had lived in Pacific Coast since 1980.
She was a member of St. Mary's By-The-Sea Episcopal Church, the League of Women Voters, the American Association of University Women, the Democratic Women’s Club and the Wellesley Club.
