Mary Russell Scholarship

The Mary Russell Scholarship was established by home economics students, teachers and friends and was originally awarded to a home economics student. Since there is no longer a home economics program, the scholarship is award to a USAO student on the basis of need.

Russell was chairman of home economics at OCW from 1945-1965. During that time, Gary Hall was built to serve the home economics department.

The first Student Home Economics organization was started by Mary Russell at Harding Junior High. She went on to become the state supervisor of home economics and had the first state meeting of Home Economics Clubs in 1931. The first state rally was held in 1937 with 600 delegates attending.

Having started Future Homemakers of Oklahoma, she helped organize Future Homemakers of America on the national level and sent in the first Oklahoma affiliation in 1945.
