2015 trip to Rome, Florence announced
With students having just returned from a whirlwind tour of Vienna, Berlin and Prague, plans are already underway for a trip next year to Rome and Florence at the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma.
The trip will include five nights in Rome and four nights in Florence, Italy.
Dr. Stephen Weber, professor of music and chair of the arts and humanities division at the university, is leading the trip, which is scheduled for late spring of 2015.
Weber said that traveling abroad makes an important contribution to a student’s undergraduate education.
“The whole experience is life-changing,” Weber said. “There’s no substitute for witnessing the unique qualities of other cultures firsthand.”
The cost, which is estimated at $2800, will include airfare, lodging, entrance fees historical sights and ground transportation.
Oklahoma Study Abroad is organizing the trip.
Weber said that Oklahoma Study Abroad’s unique approach maximizes a student’s exposure to local culture while keeping costs low.
“Christian Aylea, the program’s director, hires college-aged guides from the areas we visit to take us around,” Weber said. “They know the history and the culture because they have lived it first-hand and can relate to the visiting students better than traditional tour guides.”
Weber said that the tours also take advantage of youth hostels for lodging to keep the cost of housing while abroad affordable.
The first informational meeting for the trip is tentatively scheduled for early September.
