BERTON, Sally M. (Meyer)
Funeral services will be held for Sally May Berton, 89, of Verden at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, July 13, 2012, at the First Baptist Church in Verden with Roy Boyer officiating. Sally May Berton was born in Yoakum, Texas, on August 11, 1922, the daughter of Oscar A. Meyer & Julia Cecelia (May) Meyer. She died on Tuesday, July 10, 2012, in Chickasha.
Sally grew up in the Corpus Christi area and graduated from high school there in 1939. She later attended Draughons Business College, Sul Ross State College in Alpine, Texas, and Daniel Baker College in Brownwood, Texas.
Sally married Robert Sylvester Berton in Pleasantville, New Jersey, on June 10, 1944. To that union their three children were born. The family settled in Cushing, Oklahoma where Robert preceded her in death in 1962. She worked for the First National Bank & Trust Co. in Cushing from 1953 until 1984. In August of 1984, she moved to the Chickasha area where she has resided ever since.
Sally was employed by the University of Science & Arts of Oklahoma from 1984 until her retirement in 1998. Sally was a member of the Catholic Church Altar Society and the Catholic Daughters. She taught religious classes in Cushing and Chickasha and served on the church board in Cushing. She was a member of the Holy Name Catholic Church in Chickasha, though since her move to Verden she has been a permanent visitor of the First Baptist Church there.
Sally enjoyed watching sports, reading, painting and making mystery food. She loved to spend time with her grandchildren; her family was her passion.
She was preceded in death by: both parents and her husband, Robert Berton. Survivors include: daughters, Sally Ann Berton Greer of Tulsa, Sue Payne & husband Butch of Alex, and Terry Patterson & husband Sam of Verden; grandchildren, David Payne & wife Tammie, Jay Payne & wife Becca all of Alex, Kara Tharp & husband Chad, Kory Patterson, and Keely Patterson all of Verden; great-grandchildren, Kelsie Oaks & husband Josh, Bailey Payne, and Dalton Payne all of Alex, Colter Tharp of Verden, and Sage Payne and Mesa Payne of Alex; and great-great-grandson, Jaxton Oaks of Alex.
