Kids Invade USAO Campus for Artscope June 14

Seventy-nine 8-12 year-old students will occupy the campus of the University of Science and Arts beginning June 14 as part of Artscope -- a two-week summer camp that engages children in theatre, dance, visual arts and music.

The Artscope summer camp program is in its 12th year in Chickasha. The camp is a non-profit program with support from the Oklahoma Arts Council, the USAO Foundation and the Chickasha Area Arts Council.

"Instructors for this year's camp are exceptional," said Susan McCaughtry, Artscope director. "This will be a great year of summer fun for the kids."

USAO Assistant Professor of Drama Katie Davis and Alexandra Bohannon are teaching theatre during the camp -- with a focus on Shakespeare. Davis has taught at Artscope for several years. Bohannon attended the camp as a student before becoming an instructor. She is the daughter of USAO's Ken and Julie Bohannon.

"For the camp's afternoon festivals, Marcus Bilyue will guide students in stage combat, while Alexandra and Katie will demonstrate how to apply stage makeup," McCaughtry said.

USAO alum Angela Moore will teach the upper grade campers in the visual arts. "She will use a variety of applications to express and learn about Picasso, Van Gogh, Louis Nevelson and Jim Dine."

USAO alum and Chickasha Junior High School art instructor Amy Widener is scheduled to teach the younger visual arts class. "Her emphasis will include George Seurat and Georgia O'Keefe. Students will be painting with acrylics and water colors, drawing with charcoal, and using oil pastels to explore pointillism techniques and blending colors," McCaughtry said.

Emily Hector, who teaches dance at USAO and is the owner of Love to Dance, will work with students in Michael Bennett, Chorus Line, Grease and the Zoot Suit Riot. USAO graduate Crystal Wyatt, who teaches music at Chickasha Junior High School, will teach music using Jazz as her emphasis.

Kathie Talley will direct campers with physical games and challenges during morning and afternoon breaks. "Her family has helped with recreation time for several years. Each year they incorporate new and fun activities for the campers."
