CHICKASHA -- In a time when differences set people apart, Oklahoma City metro artist Paul Medina sees only similarities.

" We are more alike than we are different," Medina said. " Our basic needs, our strengths, our fragilities connect us all, far more than the individual differences that are so blatantly glaring in the world."

Medina's original multimedia artwork now is on display in the USAO Art Gallery in Davis Hall at the University of Science and Arts. A combination of wood-carved carpentry, photography and painting, Medina's artwork uses the similarities of human form and expression to capture candid moments of emotion.

" Paul Medina's work offers the viewer a range of emotion," said Layne Thrift, assistant director of the USAO Art Gallery. " His art reveals the emptiness of loss and loneliness balanced by iconic images of myth and whimsy. USAO is very pleased to exhibit the artist's current work."

Intricate woodcuttings, muted colors and organic repetition create the canvas in which photographs capture expressive human emotions. Medina adds decorative elements from nature, religious icons, even the Greek motif to counterpoint the simplicity of his human subjects.

" I always hope that these instances of humanity I try to portray speak of that sameness we share," Medina said. " They are iconic in their very nature. And so my work, when it is at its best, shows the viewer moments that we can relate to, that 'yes … we have felt that before. We have been that lonely, too. We have been that lost in our lives. We have loved.'"

Medina's artwork remains on display in the USAO Art Gallery through Feb. 8. The USAO Art Gallery is located in Davis Hall on 17th Street in Chickasha and is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The gallery is free and open to the public.
