Mitchell retires after 33 years service at USAO

Colleagues and friends said farewell to the friendly face of USAO security for more than 33 years, Ron Mitchell, on Feb. 11. Members of the campus family gathered in the Student Center for a reception in his honor.

“USAO has been a good place to work,” Mitchell said. “I made a lot of friends. Like people say, I didn’t plan to be here for 30 years, but it turned out that we were very settled and very happy here.”

Mitchell graduated from Duncan High School in 1967 and enrolled at the Oklahoma College of Liberal Arts (now USAO) in 1970.  He met and married the former Kay Cole of Chickasha, in 1977, the same year he accepted a job in security on campus.

Monica Treviño, who now serves as vice-president for enrollment management, remembers Ron Mitchell as “the very first face I met at USAO.”

When she came for an interview in 2009, “it was Ron and Kay who picked me up at the airport, gave me a tour of the campus and even suggested where I might enjoy shopping, dining and getting my hair done in Chickasha.

“They made me feel like I was ‘home’ before I even set foot on campus” she told guests at the reception.

“Ron never has a bad day and has loyally served with professionalism and diligence.”

Kay Mitchell graduated from USAO and worked for 35 years as an elementary teacher in Bradley, then Alex, until her recent retirement.

The Mitchell’s daughter, Kim, graduated from Chickasha High School. She recently earned her master’s degree from the University of California-Northridge. She works in special education in Washington DC.

The Mitchells are considering some travel abroad, but right now are enjoying a less hectic schedule.
