Montmartre festival rained out but Spring Triad marches on

Fielding only 16 participants, the scholastic team from Deer Creek High School was “the little team that could” as it scored the first place trophy at the 2013 USAO Scholastic Meet. The scholastic meet is one of several events held on the first Thursday in April as part of the university’s Spring Triad.

Three days of precipitation and standing water in the Oval led to the first ever “rained out” Montmartre Chalk Art Festival but the yearly scholastic meet and Droverstock music festival went on as planned.

Approximately 900 students from 39 schools competed in the statewide high school scholastic meet and fans from throughout the area enjoyed the music of 11 bands during Droverstock, an all-day music festival.

In the 29th year of USAO’s scholastic meet, faculty presented testing in more than two-dozen categories and awarded the top five students in each. Four high schools took home trophies for having the most students win awards in the meet.

Deer Creek High School won first place for academic achievements, followed by Mustang High School, second, and Plainview, third. Navajo took the small school honorable mention.

Due to the chilly temperatures and lingering threat of rain, the live music was moved indoors to Te Ata Memorial Auditorium where bands from across the state rocked the stage for more than 10 hours.

Bands and performers featured in Droverstock included Colourmusic, the show’s headliner as well as other groups like Deer People, Horse Thief and Eureka. Campus performers including the Key Players of USAO and Drake King, a sophomore psychology major from Fort Towson, entertained visiting students in the morning.

Droverstock was sponsored by university organizations like the Student Activities Board, Cultural and Recreation Committee, Student Government and Student Services as well as local businesses including Mosley Agency, Arvest Bank and Cells-U-More.

The Spring Triad event is held annually on the first Thursday of April at USAO.
