Registration now open for USAO summer reading tutoring program

Programs for kindergarten through seventh grade students begin June 7

University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma upper level education majors will tutor area elementary students in reading for eight weeks this summer. Students who have completed kindergarten through seventh grade are eligible for the free service. Registration for the summer reading program is now available. Space is limited and will be filled on a first come, first served basis.

Beginning June 7, USAO education majors will work one-on-one with students twice a week under the supervision of Dr. Linda McElroy, professor of education. Tutorial sessions are scheduled Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:05-10 a.m. through July 26. The tutoring will include reading and writing activities specifically designed for each individual child.

“Our goal is to provide each child with successful, enjoyable experiences that will support their literacy development," said McElroy. “It is an outstanding experience for the USAO students as well, and we appreciate the interest and support of the parents who make the commitment to have the children here for the tutoring sessions.”

McElroy stressed the need for students to remain active in the program once they are selected.

"We want parents to understand that it is very important for the child to attend the sessions," she said. “If parents know the child will miss more than two sessions, we need to save the spot for a child who can attend."
