By Khassandra Hameg

“I would not be the liberal tree hugging hippie I am today without my education at USAO and all my wonderful faculty and peers who contributed to my upbringing” is how Tonya Spencer describes her experience at USAO.

Spencer received her degree in English from USAO in 1992. She earned her Master of Arts in teaching from Western Carolina University. She is currently a Red Earth MFA Creative Writing Student at Oklahoma City University.

In 1992, she joined the Army and was a non-commissioned officer. Spencer oversaw the training of 100 plus soldiers. “My U.S. military service allowed me to embark on a lifetime of dreams and ambitions,” she said.

Spencer has been a finance manager, teaching assistant, customer care representative, sales representative, an instructor and a computer game programming student.

When asked about her life accomplishments, she said “my accomplishments are those evidenced by my friends and family who continue to adjourn me with their love and admiration.”
