USAO Choir Concert Features Sacred and Secular Music March 31

The sounds of spring are in the air -- birds singing, lawnmowers running and the Concert Choir at the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma getting ready for its spring concert March 31.

The Concert Choir's spring concert is scheduled at 7:30 p.m. in the Davis Hall Theatre on the USAO campus. The concert is free and the public is invited.

"The concert is scheduled to include sacred and secular music from various periods," said Dr. Jan Hanson, professor of music and conductor of the choir. Seasonal music will include the Gregorian Chant, Stabat Mater, along with several settings of the same melody from different periods -- including the 20th century.

The Stabat Mater chant originates from the 13th century and is part of the Roman Catholic Liturgy, usually sung on the memorial of Our Lady of Sorrows -- Sept. 15. The highly dramatic chant text reflects upon the suffering of Mary, the mother of Jesus, during his crucifixion," Hanson said. The Gregorian Chant will be sung in the original Latin and will be followed by several settings of the same text set for mixed choir and women's voices.

The choir also will perform lighter music in several different styles including Red River Valley (American folk song) and songs from the musical theater including The Ballard of Sweeney Todd, from the show and film Sweeney Todd, and Finale B from the hit musical and film Rent.

Two spirituals also will be included in the program -- Nothin' Gonna Stumble My Feet and Keep Your Lamps Trimmed and Burnin'.

Rhenada Finch, instructor in music, serves as accompanist for the concert. Finch is the USAO staff accompanist and director of the Five Bs Music Festival at USAO.

The Concert Choir is a choral ensemble of men's and women's voices. The choir consists of music majors as well as students in other disciplines. The Concert Choir performs annual concerts on campus each trimester and has collaborated with both high school and university choirs throughout the area.

The choir performed in the Bernstein Festival in February and is scheduled to perform in April during the Minerva Awards at USAO.
