USAO to host Ambassadors of Music camp in June

One of the numerous summer camps held on the USAO campus will be that of the Oklahoma Ambassadors of Music, June 1-4, in preparation for the organization’s European tour, June 6-21.

OAM consists of a jazz band, concert band and choir made up of high school students who show exceptional musical ability and good character. Students are nominated for membership by their school band or choir director. This year’s group features 157 musicians—95 in band, 46 in choir and 16 in both—from 47 different institutions all across Oklahoma.

The Oklahoma Ambassadors have toured every other summer since 1997, performing all over Europe. This year, their performance itinerary includes London, Paris, Switzerland, Austria, Liechtenstein, Venice, and concludes in Rothenburg, Germany.

Prior to their tour, the Ambassadors will perform their complete repertoire Sunday, June 4, at 2 p.m. in USAO’s Te Ata Memorial Auditorium. The concert is free and open to the public.

“We are excited that USAO is able to host us this year and would like to thank Dr. Jan Hanson in particular for helping make this possible,” said Greg Johnson, OAM tour director. “We believe that connecting with new people and sharing their musical talents is one of the greatest experiences these students can have. This opportunity can be life-changing for them—it gives them a taste of Europe and will hopefully serve as the foundation to becoming a lifelong traveler.”

Greg and Diane Johnson of Mustang High School were named tour directors for OAM in 2007 and have travelled with the group since 1999. They also serve as lead choir coordinators. Under their leadership, more than 1,000 participants have toured as part of OAM. Bartlesville High School’s Alex Claussen serves as this year’s lead band director, while Joe Wilhelm of Grove High School will conduct the jazz band.

The Ambassadors of Music tours are a project of Voyageurs International Ltd., a Colorado-based company founded in 1970 to take American students and their music to audiences overseas. VIL has organized music groups in more than 30 states and has served over 160,000 participants in its history.
