USAO to host bluegrass fusion group in concert

The Cleverlys to perform at USAO March 3

The Cleverlys will bring their unique blend of hip-hop, modern pop and classic rock music performed in bluegrass style to the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma as part of the 15th season of the Davis-Waldorf Performing Arts Series. The Cleverlys will perform in the Te Ata Auditorium at USAO on Thursday, March 3 at 7:30 p.m.

The Cleverlys originate from a remote part of the Ozark Mountains in Arkansas. They rose to fame in 2010 when their unique version of the Black Eyed Peas hit song, “I Gotta Feeling,” went viral on YouTube. While most of their songs are covers of popular classic and contemporary songs, The Cleverlys also perform some original works. The group is well-known in Branson, Missouri.

Digger Cleverly, the head of the band, has opened for Jeff Foxworthy, is working on a television project, a recording deal and may soon be the national spokesman for Bad Boy Mowers. The rest of the band, consisting of Vernon Dean “VD” Cleverly, Ricky Lloyd Cleverly and Monk Cleverly, use their choice instruments of acoustic guitar, fiddle, banjo, mandolin and upright bass to create their distinctive style of bluegrass music.

“Our mission is to provide culture, entertainment and an educational experience to the community,” said Dr. Kenneth Bohannon, professor of music and coordinator of the Davis-Waldorf Performing Arts Series. “We hope that The Cleverlys performance, as with all performances in the Davis-Waldorf series, will allow students and members of the community to have an exciting and engaging experience. The Cleverlys are fantastic entertainers.”

Sponsored by USAO with major funding support from the Oklahoma Arts Council, the National Endowment for the Arts, USAO Foundation and the Chickasha Public School Foundation, The Davis-Waldorf Performing Arts Series is an annual series that aims to bring culture and entertainment to USAO students and the community of Chickasha, showcasing a wide variety of musical talent.

The Cleverlys performance will be the final show in this year’s Davis-Waldorf season.

General admission tickets are $12 for the general public, $10 for seniors 60 and over, $4 for all students and kids under 18, $7 for USAO staff/faculty and $3 for USAO students. Tickets can be purchased at the USAO Business Office, online at, or by calling (405) 574-1213.
