USAO prepares for fun-filled 2018 Spring Triad

Each year on the first Thursday of April, the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma hosts what is known as the Spring Triad, its largest annual event.

Comprising of the Montmartre Chalk Art Festival, the USAO Scholastic Meet and Droverstock Music Festival, the 2018 Spring Triad will be held April 5. The public is welcome to explore and enjoy the artwork, music, food, vendors and other recreational activities on campus over the course of the day.

“As we prepare for another absolutely fantastic Spring Triad, I want to welcome everyone to our campus to share in the diverse entertainments of this celebratory day,” said President John Feaver. “Beyond all the entertainment this event brings to our current students and community, it also serves a secondary role as a recruiting event for USAO. The mix of artistic and academic events along with great live music really makes an impression on students thinking about where to go for college.”

Within the confines of a 6-foot by 6-foot square, the Montmartre Festival invites artists of all ages and skill levels to flex their creative muscles in water-based temporary chalk. USAO art alumni will judge each entry and winners will be announced at a ceremony in the early afternoon. Awards are given for Best in Show as well as Judges Choice in four age categories: elementary (grades 6 and below), junior high (grades 7-9), high school (grades 10-12) and college/adult.

In the Scholastic Meet, students from regional high schools compete in more than two dozen subjects, taking tests written and proctored by USAO faculty. Awards are given to the five highest scores in each individual subject as well as to the four high schools with the highest number of students to win medals.

Droverstock is a destination for bands from around the country and from many different genres to perform on campus. The 2018 lineup includes Holly Beth, Rebekah Willoughby, Symmetry, Me Oh My, Cosmic Wool, The Ivy, Smokey Motel, Keeping Secrets, Dollar.98, Astral Planes and KALO.

Food vendors include Tasty Beats, Kona Ice, The Healthy Hippo, Ice Cream Extreme and Two Vets Food and Beverage. USAO’s Inter-Tribal Heritage Club will be selling Indian tacos, the Alumni Association will have Baked Bear ice cream sandwiches, and the West Wind Unitarian Universalist Congregation will be selling baked goods.
