Winona Marie Miller Winona Marie Miller (20 Feb 1926-14 Jan 2014) Winona Miller was born Winona Fugate in Hobart, OK to Omar and Duchesse Fugate. Duchesse had contracted smallpox from one of her students and was near death when she gave birth. Winona contracted smallpox three days later and both nearly died, but were nursed back to health by a lady doctor who gave them specialized care. Winona saw much of Oklahoma during the Dust Bowl days moving with her parents who were teachers from Hobart to Colony where she began her schooling and then moved to Cloud Chief, Gerty, Paden and then Hugo where she finished high school during the height of WWII. After attending Oklahoma College for Women at Chickasha for two years, she moved to Dallas where she worked for Caterpillar Tractor Co. for two years in accounting. Winona then moved to Tulsa with some girlfriends where she worked for Carter Oil Co. for two years in accounting. It was in Tulsa in 1951 that she met Willis Smith at 10th and Rockford Church of Christ and they soon married and moved to Wichita, KS where she worked in accounting for Vornado Fan Corp. for two years. They moved back to Tulsa where she worked for KOTV for two years. Winona took a 10-year hiatus from working outside the home to give birth to two sons and enjoyed inspiring them into a lifetime of learning regarding their Christian faith and the world God created. Winona went to work at Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Oklahoma in Tulsa where she was employed in Public Relations, Marketing and then Personnel. She retired in 1993 after 27 years of service. Willis passed away in 1982 after they had been married for 31 years. Winona met Levi Miller at 10th and Rockford Church of Christ and they were married in 1992. They made their home in Tulsa for almost 20 years where they enjoyed retirement life and family before Levi passed away in 2011. It was at that time that Winona moved to The Broadmoor, an independent living facility in Tulsa. Winona is survived by: one sister: Sharon and Dave Anderson (Tulsa), two sons: Mike and Denise Smith (Saudi Arabia) Stan and Chan Smith (Thailand), two grandsons and their wives: Brett and Lisa (Australia), Scott and Sarai (Nepal), three grandchildren: Matthew (UK), Lauren (Chicago) and Samuel (Thailand), one great granddaughter: Selah Smith (Australia). Winona was preceded in death by: parents: Omar and Duchesse Fugate, two husbands: Willis Smith and Levi Miller, two brothers: Ray Fugate (Edmond, OK), Lee Fugate (Luther, OK). Since she loved little children, contributions to Hope Harbor in Claremore could be made in lieu of flowers Funeral services for Winona Miller will be at Floral Haven's Heritage Mausoleum Chapel at 10 am on Friday 17 December.
