CHICKASHA – USAO Baseball and Softball alumni gathered for a late-summer reunion, to share in food, laughter and friendly competition.

“It was just a fun time. It’s something I’ve really wanted to do and get everybody back, and I was really happy to see some of the original (1970s) baseball team,” Baseball Coach Mike Ross said. “It exceeded my expectations. And I expect it to be even bigger and better next year.”

All-in-all, both Ross and Softball Coach Jenn White-Cody were pleased with the turnout — with 91 golfers at the tournament, almost 70 dinner guests and roughly 45 former players in the pickup games.

“We had actually more show up for the game than we expected to. The whole weekend went well,” Cody said. “I think it’s great for our school and our softball program.”

The teams hosted a golf tournament for alumni and community members alike, a night of dinner and drinks for the alumni and finally, an alumni game. Enough baseball players returned to play an alumni-on-alumni game. Softball, however, pitted alumni against the 2011 Drovers.

Former players came in from all over, some traveling from as far as Florida, Canada and Arizona.

“They came from far and wide, so it was good,” Ross said. “Everybody seemed to have a good time, and everybody seemed they wanted to do it again.”

The event was an opportunity to gather baseball and softball alumni, but also the raise money for the current programs, which hope to build a shared indoor hitting facility. Ross said he hopes the programs raised $5,000, but they are not yet sure of the exact amount raised.

“I definitely want to thank everybody that came and everybody who helped with the organization,” Ross said.
