SHAWNEE – Despite a strong first five innings, the Drovers couldn’t overtake the No. 8 Oklahoma Baptist Bison in the second game of the Sooner Athletic Conference tournament.
The game was close up until a tough sixth inning propelled the Bison into a large lead.
The Bison were able to score first with three in the bottom of the third, and the Drovers responded with a run in the top of the fourth. With two outs, Brian Vigo tripled to deep center field to score Zach Gonzalez from first base.
The Drovers then went on a three-run rally, again with two outs, in the top of the fifth. With Nolan Crowdus and Romus Cezar on base, Heath Wilda hit a two-RBI double over the head of the Bison center fielder.
The next at bat, Wilda crossed the plate thanks to an RBI single by Brandon Jewett.
The Drovers gave up two more runs in the bottom of the fifth, but Robert Summers tied it in the sixth with an in-the-park home run deep into right field. The fence caught the fielder, which gave Summers the chance to round the bases.
Konrad Mueller also scored in the inning off Cezar’s hit in the gap.
The Drovers got into some trouble, loading the bases in the sixth with no outs. After several errors and a home run, the Drovers trailed 12-6.
In the eighth, Jewett hit a solo homer over the fence at left center to narrow the Bison lead. But the Drovers gave up four more runs in the bottom of the eighth.
In the top of the ninth, Vigo grabbed a run off a RBI single by Mueller. Crowdus and Mueller also punched runs in before the Drovers fell to OBU 16-10.
Errors were ultimately the Drovers’ downfall on Thursday evening. Of the 16 runs scored by the Bison, only half were earned.
USAO is 28-20 overall. They finish the season with a final conference tournament game at 2 p.m. Friday against Saint Gregory’s.
