CHICKASHA – The Drovers could not overtake the No. 19 Lubbock Christian Chaparrals in a three-game series at Bill Smith Ballpark. USAO fell in another two games on Saturday.

The first game of the doubleheader stayed scoreless until the fifth inning, when Lubbock Christian scored its first three runs. USAO gave up another five in the next two innings before scoring late in the seventh for the first time Saturday.

Garan Qualls hit a single to center field, allowing Andrew Reyes to score. Later in the inning, senior Cody Bridgman scored off a passed ball.

The two runs weren’t enough for the Drovers, who fell 8-2 in the first game of the doubleheader.

The third game of the series — and second of the day — didn’t start off much stronger for USAO. After giving up two runs, the Chaps hit back-to-back home runs in the top of the fourth.

Junior Brandon Jewett responded in the bottom of the fourth with his ninth homer of the season. A few batters later, Qualls scored off a sacrifice fly by left fielder Jake Dunbar, but the Drovers couldn’t grab another and were defeated 4-2.

Caleb Martin pitched a complete game for USAO, striking out six batters.

The losses pull USAO to 22-20 overall and 9-16 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.

They take on Northwestern Oklahoma State for a single game at 3 p.m. Monday at Bill Smith Ballpark and then take on NCAA Division II Cameron University at 3 p.m. Tuesday also in Chickasha.
