CHICKASHA – February in Chickasha means Drover baseball is back. Head coach Mike Ross is confident in the group he’s assembled and is looking forward to a great 2012 season.

“Hopefully, they can hope to see the exciting game baseball,” he said. “We have a good club. I think they’ll be exciting to watch, so hopefully everybody will enjoy it when they come out and watch.”

Preseason polls put USAO tied with Wayland Baptist for fifth in the conference, a place Ross said is a fair ranking.

“I think preseason-wise that's a respectable place to be. The Sooner Athletic Conference is a great baseball league,” he said. “Great competition, which makes it a lot of fun … If you can have a successful season in our conference then you’ve done a really good job.”

The Drovers opened the season this past weekend at Texas College and went 2-2 in the series.

“We played pretty good defense, pitched it really well. I just thought we were a little too aggressive at the plate,” he said. “Hopefully, they learned not to take any games for granted. You’ve got to show up and play every pitch until the last out is made.”

The Drovers open at home this weekend with a three-game series against Friends University. They play a doubleheader on Sunday beginning at 1 p.m. and a single game on Monday at noon.
