CHICKASHA – With already three series under their belts, the 2013 Drover baseball players are off to a strong 9-2 start.
“We’ve played pretty well so far. I’m happy with what we’ve done,” Head Coach Mike Ross said. “We finished the season really strong last year, and I think coming into this year they needed to get off to a good start, and I think we’ve done that.”
With almost all the starters returning and a whooping 16 seniors on the team, Ross said he has a group of players who are determined, focused and motivated.
“It’s a lot of fun to coach those guys,” he said. “It’s nice to have those guys. They’ve been around; they’ve played a lot of baseball. It’s kind of funny, when we go to practice, I don’t even have to say much. They know what we are going to do. They do their jobs.”
Preseason NAIA polls have three conference opponents — Oklahoma City, Rogers State and Oklahoma Baptist — in the Top 10 and another — Lubbock Christian — at No. 16. USAO is projected to finish just behind those teams at fifth in the SAC.
“It’s just a good baseball conference, and I like that about the conference. It makes me proud to be in the Sooner Athletic Conference,” Ross said. “If we can go do what we are capable of doing, there’s no reason we can’t crack the Top 25 and be one of those teams ranked.”
