CHICKASHA – With few returners and a young group, Coach Brisco McPherson has been focusing on defense to get his Drovers through the upcoming basketball season.

“We’ve still got a young team,” he said. “The difference between last year’s team and this year’s team is that we have players who’ve actually played in this league.”

Along with the four returners, McPherson has some new recruits who add some significant height to the team. While scoring points in essential, McPherson — this year in his 20th season heading up the program — is choosing to focus on defense because USAO will play against some high-powered offenses, including the returning National Champions.

The Drovers scrimmaged Seminole State College recently, and McPherson said he was surprised by how well the defense played, leading the Drovers to win two of three halves against the Trojans.

“I was impressed by the way we defended them … that’s how we beat them,” he said. “That was encouraging.”
