CHICKASHA – Nationally ranked for the fourth week in a row and earning Coach Brisco McPherson’s 300th milestone win, it’s safe to say the Drover men’s basketball team is having a strong season.
Senior Brandon Cutler said the team’s early conference hiccups are now out of the way and the Drovers are ready to play hard, win some games and get their opportunity at the NAIA National Tournament.
“Our goal for this year is basically to go to nationals and win and get a ring,” he said. “In practice all the time, Coach McPherson says he already has a ring and that just motivates us, puts fire under us, to get ours.”
In the conference opener against Rogers State, which was then ranked No. 9, the Drovers pulled out a seven-point victory to give McPherson his 300th, something Cutler said he was proud to be a part of.
“It felt good just to kind of help him out to achieve greatness,” Cutler said. “We definitely dedicated that game for him. We all worked hard because we knew how special that moment would be for him.”
Cutler transferred to USAO in 2011 from NCAA Division I Stephen F. Austin in large part because of the Drovers’ coaches.
“I really liked the coaching staff. Coach Metcalf and Coach McPherson really take care of you on and off the court,” Cutler said. “And I liked the basketball program, and it’s close to home, which is always a plus.”
