CHICKASHA – The University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma will host the 2014 Vinson Metcalf Basketball Camp, a skills and fundamentals camp for athletes of nearly all ages, during two week-long periods in June.
“We are looking for some new and improved aspects to our camp,” said camp namesake Vinson Metcalf, USAO’s men’s basketball head coach. “My assistant, Chris Francis, has some new ideas for the camp this upcoming year. As always, there will be games, fun and awards.”
The camp offers area youth an opportunity to improve their skills and train with college coaches and athletes. Returning members of the Drover basketball team will assist Metcalf and Francis in the camp.
Campers will have two registration options. The three-hour mini camp will focus on basic understandings of the sport and is designed to strengthen player fundamentals.
The mini camp is for boys ages six through 11 and is the morning-only session. The camp, which is $75, is offered June 2-6 or June 23-27.
The other option is the day camp, which is for older campers. The difference is the level of skill improvement and the team aspects the day camp offers. Each afternoon will feature combination skills and five-on-five team games.
Campers in the day camp should be between the ages of 12-16. Registration for the day camp is $125, which offers an additional three hours of training. It is only offered from June 2-6.
“The camp will feature free throw shooting contests, fundamental stations and individual workouts, along with five-on-five competitions and free t-shirts and other awards,” Metcalf said.
All campers will receive a camp T-shirt, and awards will be given to players at each age level in a variety of categories.
Each camper should wear a T-shirt, playing shorts, socks and basketball shoes each day of the camp and should be dropped off and picked up by the appointed times.
Metcalf, who was an assistant for the Drovers when they claimed the 2002 NAIA National Championship, led the 2013-14 team to the Sooner Athletic Conference Semifinals in his first year as a head coach.
