After taking one team to the SAC Tournament and another to the National Tournament, it’s no wonder Soccer Coach Jimmy Hampton was named the NSCAA Southwest Region Coach of the Year.
Hampton has been head of both the women’s and men’s soccer teams since the programs were created 11 years ago.
“To be fair, it’s nice because there are a lot of good coaches,” he said. “It’s a great honor. A very, very nice surprise.”
Hampton gave the credit to his players and supporting cast of assistant coaches.
“You win because you have good players,” he said. “For me, I’m a by product … of a very good coaching staff.”
The women ended the season with one of the program’s best records at 13-6. Hampton led the men, however, to the opening round of the National Tournament, where the team lost the game by just one penalty kick and ended the season at 17-2-1.
Hampton said he thinks the honor also reflects the 11 years of good seasons.
“When they look at our program and what we’ve done, year in and year out they see a good team,” he said. “(I’m) very honored and humbled by (the award).”
Hampton’s overall record is 262-191-26 for both team, and he also was named SAC Coach of the Year.
He currently lives in Piedmont.
