OKLAHOMA CITY – Plagued with injuries, the Drovers season came to an end on Friday evening at the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament despite strong performances by several of the players.

The tournament, which took place at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City, was  double-elimination style.

The Drovers fell 5-4 in the first game of the tournament in a game against No. 14 Saint Gregory’s, even after hitting back-to-back homers to tie the game in the seventh.

The Cavaliers struck first scoring a run in the bottom of the first inning. But they didn’t hold the lead for long. The Drovers fought back with a run of their own in the top of the third – when Brooke McLeod scored off an RBI by Markie LaFerney.

After giving up three runs in the bottom of the fourth, the Drovers scored their second run of the game in the top of the sixth. Taylor Smith was able to score from third on a fielder’s choice hit by Morgan Bratcher.

Needing two runs to tie the game in the top of the seventh, Sara Reeves and LaFerney hit back-to-back solo homers to force the game into the bottom of the inning. It was LaFerney’s first home run of the season.

The late rally wasn’t enough, however, as Cavalier Whitney Anderson scored a walk-off homer in the bottom of the inning.

Bratcher and McLeod split time in the circle in the game. USAO’s starting center fielder, Chelsea Zuchnik, was injured running to first late in the game and did not play the rest of the day.

The Drovers faced Mid-America Christian just a few hours later. In that game, the Drovers found success early, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first.

The bases were loaded with USAO’s lead off hitter Katie Jirak and McLeod having walked, and then Smith singling to left field. Catcher Kayla Adams doubled to left center to bring all three runners home.

In the next four innings, the Drovers allowed three MACU runs to tie the game. In the bottom of the fifth, they took their lead back when Ashley Rasovic scored off a sacrifice fly by Bratcher.

The Drovers last run came on the next play when Jessica Horton hit a single to score Adams.

USAO was leading 5-3 in the top of the seventh when MACU scored three to take the lead. The Drovers couldn’t recover in the bottom of the inning and fell 6-5.

Bratcher spent six innings in the circle, throwing eight strikeouts.

The Drovers wrapped up the season with the conference tournament.
