CHICKASHA – The Drovers won both games of a Wednesday afternoon doubleheader against Morningside College to advance to 10-6 on the season.
After traveling all the way from Iowa, it was the Morningside Mustangs who struck first, scoring in the third inning of the first game. The Drovers retaliated in the bottom of that inning with a run by Markie LaFerney off a single by shortstop Taylor Smith.
The Drovers took the lead in the following inning when Kayla Adams dove over the catcher to land on home plate off a single by Mindi Locke.
USAO got three more in the bottom of the sixth. First Sara Reeves doubled the right center, and Katie Jirak brought her home on a double to left center. A few batters later, Smith doubled to the same spot to score Jirak and Chelsea Zuchnik.
While the Mustangs got two more runs, they weren’t able to overcome the deficit and the Drovers won 5-3.
Morgan Bratcher (3-4) pitched the complete game, throwing four strikeouts. Brooke McLeod (7-2) took the helm for the second game, also throwing all seven innings.
Again, the Mustangs had the early advantage when their Jordan Johnson hit a solo homer. Both runs of the second game and three of the day for Morningside were off solo home runs.
But much like the first game, the Drovers turned around to score tie it in the bottom of the inning as Smith rounded home off an error.
USAO scored their other three of the game in the fifth inning. Smith’s sacrifice fly scored LaFerney for the Drover lead. McLeod singled to the shortstop, but a throwing error allowed both Jirak and Ashley Rasovic to score.
The Mustangs book-ended the game with another home run in the seventh, but the Drovers prevailed to win 4-2.
USAO travels to Claremore tomorrow to take on Rogers State on Thursday afternoon. They return home for a doubleheader against Southwestern Christian on Tuesday beginning at 1 p.m.
