CHICKASHA – USAO grabbed two more conference wins in a doubleheader against Mid-America Christian on Thursday afternoon at Bill Smith Ballpark.
The Drovers (24-23, 5-17) started off having to fight from behind after giving up a run in the first inning of the first game.
Taking the lead in the third, the Drovers scored three runs. First, pitcher Morgan Bratcher singled to left field. The following batter, Jessica Horton, who is coming off an ACL injury, hit another single, advancing to second on the attempted throw out of Bratcher, who arrived safely at third.
With runners on second and third, Sara Reeves singled to right center to score both Bratcher and Horton. Markie LaFerney drove Reeves home in the next at bat.
In the next inning, Katie Jirak tripled out to right field and returned home on a double by Brooke McLeod.
The Drovers’ final run came in the sixth inning when Bratcher hit a solo homer. USAO won 5-3.
Bratcher (11-15) pitched the complete game without giving up an earned run. She threw one strikeout and didn’t walk a single batter.
The second game remained scoreless until the bottom of the fourth when Ashley Rasovic singled to score Jirak, who had hit a single out to the shortstop. McLeod then hit a single as well, which allowed Rasovic to score.
The Drovers gave up a run in the sixth but ultimately were able to hold on to their lead and prevailed 2-1.
McLeod (17-10) threw four strikeouts in her seven innings in the circle.
The Drovers were supposed to play the first two games of the series on Tuesday, but the weather postponed the game. It is still being decided if and when the teams will play their second doubleheader.
USAO’s next scheduled home game is an away doubleheader at Langston University on Tuesday.
It was Senior Day at Bill Smith Ballpark, and the Drovers honored their six seniors: Morgan Bratcher, Jessica Horton, Katie Jirak, Tashina Ototivo, Ashley Rasovic and Chelsea Zuchnik.
