CHICKASHA – The Drovers came from behind to win the second game and split on Saturday afternoon in their home opener against NCAA Division II Cameron University.
After falling game one 12-0, the Drovers (8-4) were eager to grab a win.
With Brooke McLeod (6-1) in the circle, the Drovers gave up an early run in the first inning. Twice after that they found themselves in a sticky situation with Aggie runners on second and third, but they were able to grab three outs without allowing another run.
The Drovers finally found some success at the plate in the fifth inning. With runners on second and third, Sara Reeves singled to center field to score Kayla Adams to tie the game.
In the following inning, lead-off hitter Katie Jirak singled to left field and was advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Chelsea Zuchnik. Shortstop Taylor Smith then doubled down the left line to score Jirak and take the lead.
The Aggies couldn’t recover in the top of the seventh, and the Drovers won 2-1.
USAO’s starting second baseman, Skyler Nichols, sustained a knee injury in the first inning of the doubleheader and did not return.
The Drovers return to action on Tuesday for a conference home doubleheader against Rogers State. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
