CHICKASHA – Basketball fans itching to see the start of the college season don’t have to wait long as the Drovers kick off basketball season on Tuesday night — as always with total Madness.

Drover Madness is USAO’s annual pep rally that serves as an unofficial start for the basketball season. This year, the fun-filled event will be at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in USAO Fieldhouse.

“Drover Madness is a great event for the entire USAO community,” said Laci Tompkins, head women’s basketball coach. “It is a wonderful opportunity to meet the student athletes and get familiar with the teams, dancers, coaches and everyone. It’s just an exciting, fun-filled event for all.”

The free event is open to students and the community alike.

Madness, now in its 17th year, is a fan favorite. It’s complete with fan games, contests, free food from Jake’s Rib and free T-shirts from Shirts N Stuff.

A favorite among fans last year was a line dance, led and hosted by assistant men’s basketball coach Vinson Metcalf.

“Drover Madness is a fun, exciting night with new dances, new events and always free food,” he said.
For assistant women’s basketball coach Leandra Johnson the event is a first, but she said she’s eager to see it in action.

“I am very excited to see what Drover Madness is all about,” she said. “To see how our school and community are involved in supporting our sports and looking forward to the basketball season this year.”

The Drover basketball season begins with both teams on the road with tournaments on Nov. 4-5. The first home game will be the Drover women as they take on Texas Wesleyan at 7 p.m. Nov. 7. The Drover men play their first home game just two days later against University of Central Oklahoma. Tip off its at 7 p.m.
