CHICKASHA– With the season coming to an end for women’s cross country, the Drovers finish off the 2013 campaign with an 8th place at Sooner Athletic Conference meet on Saturday morning.
The Drovers faced their fair share of hardships in the season but found a way to secure several personal records — as well as team records — for a second-year program at the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma.
“I’m pleased with cross country, we set a few personal records this year, which will help us build for next year,” Head Coach Leandra Johnson said.
The Drovers, who just wrapped up their season in competition, had many runners who set personal records during the year.
Sophomore captain Deborah Park, who was the first Drover to cross the finish line at the SAC Championship, finished in 21:55, which was good for an individual finish of 47th and her third time to be in top 50 of the season. She set her career best at the NAIA Mid-States Classic in October.
The second runner to on Saturday for the Drovers was Joanna Burkhead, a freshman from Chandler, who continued the Drovers trend of setting personal records by setting her personal best by just 11 seconds. She finished in 5-kilometer race in 23:12.
The other Drovers who competed in the SAC Championship were Aspen Burroughs, who finished in 25:24, senior Katie Jones, finishing at 25:37, and Rachel Moses who came in with a time of 27:30.
USAO will head into the offseason looking to build on the successes from which the Drovers laid the foundation this year.
