CHICKASHA – Coach Leandra Johnson has announced that open tryouts for USAO’s new cross country team will be March 28.
The tryouts are open to all USAO and high school students. Female athletes will be running a five kilometer — or 3.1 mile — course while male athletes will run an eight kilometer — or five mile — course.
“The two things I look for in recruits is that they are extremely hard working and have good character,” Johnson said.
Johnson said she’d like to see female runners complete in course in 18-25 minutes and male runners finish between 25-34 minutes.
The final team will be composed of between 16 and 20 students, half male and half female runners. Johnson is giving away some scholarships and will welcome walk-ons as well.
“I’m looking forward to getting a team put together,” she said.
Cross country at USAO will begin this fall.
Students attending the tryouts should arrive at 2:30 p.m. at the USAO Fieldhouse, having already filled out the online recruitment form on the USAO sports website, usao.edu/sports. Tryouts will officially begin at 3:30 p.m. The course will be announced immediately before tryouts begin.
Johnson said she plans to have her team compete in four cross country meets in the fall.
Johnson took over as the cross country coach after joining the staff as the assistant women’s basketball coach in August.
