CHICKASHA – Just two meets into the 2013 cross country season and runners on both the men’s and the women’s team continue to improve their times. Captain Deborah Park, a sophomore on the squad, said the season is off to a great start.
“The season is going really, really well. It was quite a challenge last year. It was my first semester in school and in cross country,” Park said. “After first semester, I’ve learned so much … so we are really improving on how to practice and what’s good for us.”
Park set her own personal record in the second meet of the season, finishing the 5-kilometer race in 21:31. She said that this year she’s been focusing more on her cross country improvement, both in and out of practice.
“I trained really hard every day, especially this summer,” she said. “I’ve been eating really healthy. I’ve really been living the athlete lifestyle.”
With the OSU Cowboy Jamboree coming up this weekend, Park said the team has been working on hills to conquer the difficult course. Their workouts vary depending on the day and the type of meet they have next.
“A lot of people assume that cross country runners just run forever. It’s really not,” Park said. “We’ll do sprints. We’ll do hills. We’ll do ab work, focus workouts. We do ladders at the high school track … We’ve been lifting weights more than we have last year.”
