BETHANY – A big win over No. 25 Southern Nazarene sends the Drovers to the Sooner Athletic Conference Finals for the first time in the women’s program’s history.
USAO defeated the Crimson Storm in the SAC Semifinals 2-0.
“I’m so proud and happy for the women,” Coach Jimmy Hampton said. “I give all the credit to them.”
Excited to be in their first Semifinal match and eager to best SNU, who’d beat them in the regular season, the Drovers came out strong, and junior Calli Cooper knocked one in just four minutes into the game. Jordyn Yates had the assist.
The Drovers were on the attack for much of the first half but found themselves battling on defense in the second half.
With 15 minutes left in the match, senior Annie Zoch shot a free kick, which turned into a header battle and resulted in an own goal by SNU. The Drovers were up 2-0.
They were able to hold off the Storm for their ninth shutout of the season.
“The women worked their socks off, took their chances well and played great as a team,” Hampton said. “Collectively, we were great. It’s a very deserving group.”
SNU’s Rachael Wade had two saves in the game, while USAO’s Addie Tipton had four. She earned her 14th win of the season.
The Drovers will go on to play the winner of Wednesday evening’s game between Rogers State and Oklahoma City. The SAC Finals game will be on Friday, but times and location have not yet been determined.
Also Tuesday night, the Drovers topped the school’s record for most wins in a season at 14-5.
