OKLAHOMA CITY – After 90 tough minutes of ball, the Drover women earned their first ever Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament Championship with a 1-0 win on the road against No. 14 Oklahoma City.
The Drovers and the Stars both move on to the opening round of the NAIA Women’s Soccer Tournament on Nov. 19 with automatic bids.
“I’m so proud of our girls,” Coach Jimmy Hampton said. “They fought hard tonight. It’s tough to go on the road and beat SNU and OCU within three days.”
The women earned their spot in the SAC Finals after beating Southern Nazarene 2-0 on Tuesday night.
Seeding and opponents for the National Tournament opening round will be announced Sunday.
Just two weeks ago, the women fell to Oklahoma City 3-2 in the regular season battle. OCU went on to win the regular season SAC title. But Friday night had a completely different story for the Drovers.
The Drovers battled the entire first half, getting off three shots to OCU’s two. The second half was similar, although both teams had five shots in the 45 minutes.
The Drovers did, however, have a few near goals before junior Erin Coggan scored her second goal of the season off an assist by freshman Devon Legaard. Coggan’s only other goal of the season was in the previous game against the Stars.
USAO’s sophomore keeper Addie Tipton had one save in the game. Splitting time in the goal for the Stars were Ashley Bechtold and Alissa Reed, who both recorded a save.
“All the credit should go to the girls and the assistant coaches,” Hampton said. “It’s a great day to be a Drover.”
The win gives the women an overall record of 15-5 — the best in the program’s history.
The Drovers win the SAC title just a day after USAO won it on the men’s side too.
