CHICKASHA – The Drovers and the Hillcats kept fans on the edge of their seats Saturday afternoon as both soccer games came down to the wire.
When the pressure was on, however, the Drovers were able to deliver and both USAO teams left with wins.
The game wasn’t looking good for the Drover men right off the bat when USAO allowed a goal in the first fifteen seconds of the game. The team battled on the attack for much of the game, out shooting RSU 33-5.
The Drovers finally connected with a goal from Nikola Cakarevic off an assist from Nicolas Alberto with just 12 minutes left in regulation.
The game went into overtime 1-1, but the match remained tied after the 10-minute period. In double overtime, in the 108th minute of the game, defender Scott Parkinson headed a ball into the goal for the win. Assisting him was Niall Crick and Frank Gibson.
USAO defeated Rogers State 2-1 in double overtime.
The Drover women also out shot the Hillcats 33-8 throughout the 90-minute game but struggled to get a ball past RSU goalie, Chelsea McMullin, who had 12 saves in the game.
With just five minutes left in regulation, Rogers State fouled Calli Cooper in the box, allowing Taylor Fain a penalty kick, which she made. The Drovers won the game 1-0.
Keeper Nikki Thomas had three saves in the game.
The women move to 8-5-1 (4-4) and the men’s win makes them 12-2 (6-2).
The games were USAO’s last at home and served as Senior Day. Seniors Alex Cernigliaro, Brittany Jay, Taylor Smithwick, Nikola Cakarevic, Daniel Gibson, Frank Gibson, Richard Norman, David Otieno and Gavin Otieno were honored in between the men’s and women’s games.
The Drovers head off to play conference rival John Brown on Tuesday in Siloam Springs, Ark.
