CHICKASHA – The Drover women have proven to be conference contenders, sitting a second in the Sooner Athletic Conference preseason polls.
After winning the conference tournament last year for the first time, this is the highest the Drover women have appeared in the SAC preseason poll, which is voted on by conference coaches.
“We are very excited about women being considered as a top team this year,” Head Coach Jimmy Hampton said. “We lost some quality players and people last year, so we can just work hard to bring new players along to hopefully compete well in the SAC.”
While Oklahoma City received seven of the nine first-place votes, USAO came in with the final two and earned 58 points. OCU had 63 points. In third place was Oklahoma Baptist with 45 points.
The SAC lost Northwestern Oklahoma State, Oklahoma Christian and Southern Nazarene, who moved the NCAA Division II this year. This season is expected to be the last for Lubbock Christian and Rogers State, who were admitted into the NCAA Division II this summer.
The NAIA Preseason Poll is expected to be released Tuesday.
The Drovers open the season at home against Baker College on Aug. 24. The women will kick off at 3 p.m.
