The ACT® test assesses high school students' general educational development and ability to complete college-level work. The multiple-choice tests cover four skill areas: English, mathematics, reading, and science. The Writing Test, which is optional, measures skill in planning and writing a short essay.

A student takes the ACT on a national testing date at a national testing site or takes the residual ACT at the university campus that he or she plans to attend. The dates for residual ACT testing are set by the university who administers the test.
