EAST FRANKLIN Frances Scott, age 99, passed away Monday, January 12, 2015 surrounded by her loving family at her home in East Franklin. Frances was born in Springfield, Missouri on November 20, 1915, the only child of the late James & Grace (McNeer) Daughtrey. Her great-grandfather, Bird Miller, was the patriarch of one of Springfield's earliest and most prominent families. He settled at the springs in NW Springfield (Grant Beach Park) naming it Miller's Springs, where he was buried. Frances attended the Springfield, MO public school system and graduated from Greenwood High School. She attended Oklahoma College for Women, Chickasha, OK, Southwest Missouri State College (SMU), and Draughons Business College. She married Thomas K. McGuire, Sr. in the mid 1930s and had two sons, Thomas & James, from this marriage. In 1942 Frances moved to Washington, D.C. and worked for the War Production Board and the Navy Department, where she met U.S. Navy Fire Control Chief Renwick Scott, of East Franklin, Vermont. They married in 1948 and were stationed in Hawaii for two years at the U.S. Naval Shipyard, Pearl Harbor. They subsequently moved to California and were stationed at the U.S. Naval Base in San Diego. Renwick spent his 20th year in the U.S. Navy career stationed in Springfield, Massachusetts. At this time, their daughter, Joanne was born. Upon Renwick's retirement from the Navy, they moved to a century old farmhouse in East Franklin, VT and, over a twenty-year period, rebuilt and refurbished the Scott Farm dairy. After Renwick's death, Frances returned to Springfield, MO, in 1977. She was a volunteer in the office of the Council of Churches AARP Widowed Persons Service, was an original member and served on the board of the All Church Singles Club, while she worked for New York Life and Wells Fargo/Loomis Fargo for fifteen years, retiring in 2001. Frances loved to travel, and in her 70's & 80's explored Europe, Asia, the Caribbean, South America and the United States. She was an avid reader, always with a novel in hand. She is survived by her daughter, Joanne Scott of East Franklin, VT; 2 sons, Thomas K. McGuire, Jr. Esq. and James McGuire of Springfield, MO; her grandchildren, Kenton James McGuire, Marcie McGuire, of Springfield, MO, and her beloved Evan Scott James of Franklin; a step-granddaughter, Debbie McLain of Springfield, MO and niece & nephews, Mary Bates, and James and Michael Benjamin all of Northern Vermont. Besides her parents, Frances was predeceased by her husbands, Thomas K. McGuire, Sr. and Renwick F. Scott, her grandson, Mark McGuire and niece & nephew, Bruce Benjamin and Sandra Andersen. In keeping with Frances' wishes there will be no public services.
