Student Spotlight: Caleb Smith

When Caleb Smith, a biology major from Yukon, was searching for a school to attend after high school, he prioritized finding an institution where he could pursue both biology and golf seamlessly. This led him to the University of Science & Arts of Oklahoma, where the liberal arts curriculum stood out to him over other colleges.
While at USAO, Smith has managed to excel both academically and athletically. In 2021, Smith was victorious in his inaugural golf tournament at Ozarks National, and helped lead the Drovers to a third place finish as a team. Academically, he has performed noteworthy research on lactic acid thresholds, and his ecology lab project on the invasive Eragrostis Curvula has garnered attention.
“As a student athlete at USAO, I have learned how to manage my time so I am accomplished in all areas of my life,” said Smith. “I feel as if I have learned how to be able to continue to learn, even when I have so many other things going on.”
Smith holds a deep gratitude for the professors in the science department, recognizing their dedication in guiding him through his academic journey, and the countless hours they invested in him.
“I also will not forget to mention both my golf coaches, Coach Holden and Coach Burns, as I got to fulfill my dreams along with them,” said Smith.
Smith has earned several Top-10 finishes throughout his time playing for the USAO golf team and has been a great representative of the Drover spirit on and off the green.
After graduation in April, Smith is lined up to be the assistant golf professional at Belmar Golf Club in Norman.
“I am just so grateful for my time at USAO, all the people I have got to meet and each memory made. I am going to miss being here, but I am also excited to use the skills I have learned to better my future,” said Smith.
