Drover Alum Since Day One: Madison Homer

Since 1981, the USAO Alumni Association has honored a very select group of graduates with the prestigious Distinguished Graduate Award. Class of 2022 alumna, Madison Homer, is part of that select group.
Homer discovered USAO through a simple postcard in the mail, a moment that led her to the institution where she would embody the high standards of this accolade. Her exceptional academic performance, leadership and community involvement at USAO not only earned her this distinction but also set the stage for her continued pursuit of excellence as a student at the University of Oklahoma College of Law where she will graduate with her juris doctorate in May 2025.
“Being a distinguished USAO graduate has had a profound impact on my confidence and belief in my abilities post-graduation,” said Homer. “The recognition from my alma mater has affirmed that the education and experiences I gained at USAO have prepared me well for success in both law school and my future career. This validation has instilled a sense of pride in my accomplishments and reinforced my belief in my capabilities, leading me to not give up and work hard.”
During her time at USAO Homer chose to study economics and sociology after being introduced to these fields through the interdisciplinary curriculum USAO offers. After taking these introductory classes, she discovered that she wanted to learn more about disparities in wealth and opportunities in the United States.
“I knew that these fields would allow me to gain the tools and knowledge necessary to effect positive change in the world when it came to my future career,” said Homer.
She credits her time at USAO as being instrumental in the development of her critical thinking and research skills, aiding in her ability to interpret legal statues, analyze case law and construct persuasive arguments. She has worked as a legal intern for both Legal Aid Services of Oklahoma and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.
“Because of my studies at USAO I have a broader perspective when analyzing cases and assisting clients,” she said
Homer also holds a warm regard for her USAO advisors, Dr. Jennifer Long and Dr. Chris Garneau. She credits them for guiding and encouraging her, making her believe she is capable of anything as long as she put in the work and effort to get there.
During her time at USAO, Homer was active in fostering a welcoming environment for all students to enhace their college experience. She was active in the Student Activities Board and President’s Leadership Council, as well as serving a peer academic mentor. She prioritized her academic studies to maximize the learning opportunities available to her.
“The distinction of being a distinguished graduate has provided me with a sense of credibility and validation in professional settings, bolstering my confidence to take on new challenges and pursue ambitious goals,” said Homer. “Knowing that I am part of a community that values excellence and achievement has given me the assurance to navigate uncertainties and setbacks with resilience and determination. Overall, being a distinguished USAO graduate has reinforced my belief in my abilities to make a meaningful impact in the world.”
