The University of Science & Arts of Oklahoma is hosting a series of presentations throughout the fall semester, featuring distinguished alumni who have built exceptional careers in various healthcare fields. These events will provide opportunities for current and prospective students, faculty, and the public to engage with USAO graduates who are making significant contributions in their respective professions.

The first presentation was Sept. 17 featuring medical doctor, Dr. Stan Brown, DO. The next event will take place on Oct. 4 at 2:30 p.m., when Dr. Rory Barron, a physical therapist and USAO’s first Giles Biology Scholar in Residence, will offer insights into the field of physical therapy in a talk titled, “So You Think You Wanna Be… A Physical Therapist.” His and all presentations will be held in Austin Hall, Room 206.

Dr. Rory Barron, the inaugural Giles Biology Scholar in Residence, will play a key role throughout the fall semester. The Giles Biology Scholar in Residence program, launched this year, brings accomplished biologists to campus to engage with students and faculty. As part of his residency, Barron will teach specialized courses, collaborate with faculty, and assist in developing a health week campaign. Reflecting on his time at USAO, Barron said, “When I began searching for an appropriate university for my education 15 years ago, I could not have dreamt of a more perfect fit. At USAO, I was constantly challenged, mentored, and growing throughout my time there. Now, 10 years later, I am extremely excited and honored to be called to educate the next generation, to foster the same growth that I received from my education, and to share my experience and knowledge as a Giles Scholar."

Dr. Jeanette Loutsch, professor of biology at USAO and Barron’s former mentor, emphasized the significance of his return. “It is a great privilege to have Rory Barron back on the USAO campus. He was an outstanding student, deeply involved in the science department and campus life, from his leadership in the Biology and Associated Science Club to his work with Drovers Against Cancer. Seeing him now as a successful professional, sharing his expertise in orthopedic physical therapy, is incredibly rewarding. I am confident his work here will have a lasting impact on our students,” said Loutsch.

Following his presentation on Oct. 4, Dr. Barron will participate in a private welcoming event at the USAO Alumni House from 4 to 6 p.m., where he will connect with invited guests and university leaders.

The alumni series will continue with presentations from Dr. Dian Sultzbach, Pharm.D, on Oct. 10 at 11 a.m., Katie Sears Webb, PA, and Dr. Rachel Sears, DNP, on Oct. 24 at 3 p.m., and Dr. Travis Bates, DDS, on Nov. 12 at 3 p.m. These events showcase the diverse paths USAO graduates have taken in the healthcare industry and underscore the university’s pride in its alumni’s achievements.

Each presentation is free and open to the public, except for the private welcoming event on Oct. 4. High school juniors, seniors, and parents of prospective USAO students interested in these fields are encouraged to attend.
