'Operation Santa' Grows - Providing Holiday Support for USAO Families

What began as a simple thought in 2022 to support students with children during the holidays has blossomed into a cherished campus tradition at the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma. Now in its fourth year, ‘Operation Santa’ continues to expand its reach, ensuring that children of USAO students can spend holidays with their families that they will remember for a lifetime.

Jani Houtz, administrative assistant for the School of Social Sciences and Business and the School of Science and Kinesiology, initiated the effort.

’Operation Santa’ began after many years of watching our students with children turn to Santa’s workshop for help during the holidays,” Houtz said.

“In 2022, I had an ‘aha’ moment: why couldn’t USAO take care of our own students, too? From that simple thought, something truly special began to grow.”

A plan was developed to provide every child with an outfit, a toy, and a book. USAO volunteers, referred to as ‘USAO Elves’, use a questionnaire detailing children’s favorite color, snacks, clothing sizes, and shows to select personalized gifts.

“Families remain anonymous to their elves, and elves to their families, but the kindness shared between them needs no names,” Houtz noted.

The program’s impact has grown steadily since its launch. In its first year, 14 families were supported, followed by 16 families in 2023, and 21 families in 2024. So far, 23 families have been supported during this year’s cycle of Operation Santa.

Houtz pointed to the continued strength of the campus community, citing a recent incident where three volunteers immediately stepped forward to fulfill a last-minute request to support additional families.

“That is proof that the spirit of giving at USAO just keeps getting stronger,” Houtz said.

Looking ahead, Houtz foresees the program’s need continuing to grow, but believes firmly in the support of the campus.
