14 Inducted into Hypatia

Fourteen USAO students were inducted in the HYPATIA Honor Society, USAO’s only campus wide honor society, on March 29, 2004 at a noon luncheon. The Hypatia Honor Society was founded in 1923 to honor students for their high academic achievements, character and integrity, and service to the university and their community.

The honor society was named after Hypatia, the famous Greek female mathematician. Students are selected for Hypatia by a faculty committee, and it is not possible for any student to apply for membership in the Honor Society. Students serving as Officers for the Honor Society and Initiation were Kristen Polson, President, Katherine Rahlf, Vice President, and Andrea Wood, Secretary. Assisting with the initiation was Hypatia member, Jonathan Talley.

Following is the names of the students honored with a brief summary of their academic major and activities.

LORI BREANN ALLISON, a double major in Business Administration and Management. Breann is a senior from Chickasha and Craig Elder is her advisor. She teaches piano lessons to students in Alex, Chickasha, and Pocasset and plays the piano for Alex Southern Baptist Church.

KELLI BROWN, a senior from Pocasset. Kelli is working towards a Psychology major with Sociology minor. Dr. Tina Winn is her advisor. Kelli is member of the USAO Psychology Club and serves as secretary of the Psi Chi Honor Society.

FELICIA GRIFFIN, a Psychology major and a senior from Norman. Dr. Tina Winn is her advisor. Felicia is member of the Psi Chi Honor Society and a member of the USAO Psychology Club. 

DEREK HANDKE, a Chemistry major from Verden. Derek is a senior and Dr. Roch Chan-Yu-King is his advisor. Derek attended the EPSCOR Research Day at the State Capitol, sponsored by the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education. He was USAO’s representative and presented information about research performed over several trimesters with Dr. King.

DOVIE HINES, a senior, Art Education major from Lindsay. Dovie is a member in the USAO Art Club and involved in numerous activities at her church. . Jackie Knapp is her advisor.

LACEE’ HOWARD, a senior majoring in Art, with an emphasis in Graphic Design. Her hometown is Woodward. Kent Lamar is her advisor and Lacee’ is a member of the Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society.

DANA MANNING, a senior from Lindsay. Her degree plans include a major in Business. Mr. Craig Elder is her advisor.

NELSON MILLER, a senior from Duncan. Dr. J.C. Casey is his advisor, as he is working towards a Communications major. Nelson owns a website/design company. His other activities include playing bass guitar for the Praise Team at Patterson Avenue Baptist Church, serving as a youth worker and youth praise team leader. At Comanche Public Schools, Nelson is a Speech Pathology/ASL assistant instructor.

LAURA PARKER, a senior from Oklahoma City. She is an Art major with Steve Brown as her advisor. She is member of the USAO soccer team. Her other USAO activities include the Student Activities Board, Student Ambassadors, President’s Leadership Council, Art Club and the Volunteer Action Committee.

GWENDOLYN SULLIVAN, a Musical Theater major from Chickasha. She is a senior and Roger Drummond is her advisor. Gwen is active in the USAO drama department and the Chickasha Community Theater. Gwen played Violet in the recent USAO production, “You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown.” Gwen performs with the USAO Showband.

ANDREA VERSER, a senior Mathematics Education major from Minco. Her advisor is Dr. Nancy Warden. Andrea’s USAO activities include membership in Kappa Delta Pi and SNEA. She is an office assistant for the mathematics department and organizes and leads mathematics study groups. Andrea is also very active as a leader in the children and youth activities at First Baptist Church of Minco.

APRIL WADE, a senior from Blanchard. Elementary Education is the major chosen by April Wade and Dr. Jeanne Mather is her advisor. Her USAO activities include serving as Treasure of SNEA and Kappa Delta Pi, and a member of the Baptist Student Union. April participates in many activities at her local church, First Baptist, Blanchard.

ANNICA CANADY is a junior music major from Choctaw. Her advisor is Dr. Dan Hanson. Annica is member of the USAO wind ensemble.

RUSSELL DULL, a junior from Chickasha. He is working towards a major in Computer Science--MIS. Dr. Richard Tan is his advisor. Russell is the father of three boys and says that they are very good kids and he is very proud to be their father. In addition, Russell is a “motorcycle enthusiast”, an environmentalist, and an active supporter of the Oklahoma Santa’s Workshop.
