Class of 2016 alumna Sissel Brown has emerged as a prominent figure in workforce development, currently serving as deputy director for the South Central Oklahoma Workforce Board. With a degree in psychology from the University of Science & Arts of Oklahoma, Brown has dedicated her career to supporting individuals and communities through workforce and economic development initiatives.

Brown's journey into the field began shortly after her graduation from USAO. She initially worked as a workforce innovation and opportunity act case manager, a role that allowed her to leverage her psychology degree in understanding and supporting clients. Over the past eight years, she has progressed through various positions, including operations manager and project director, before reaching her current role as deputy director.

"My time at USAO was foundational in shaping my approach to both personal and professional challenges," Brown said. "The interdisciplinary courses I took have remained with me, influencing how I think, communicate and navigate complex situations."

Brown credits USAO for instilling in her a broad perspective, which has proven invaluable in her career. The education she received helped her to think critically and strategically, skills that have been crucial as she collaborates with businesses and workforce partners throughout south central Oklahoma.

Beyond her professional responsibilities, Brown is also committed to her ongoing education. She is currently pursuing a double MBA in accounting and human resources from Southeastern Oklahoma State University, with plans to graduate in December. Additionally, she serves as secretary for the Oklahoma Southwest Alliance, further extending her impact within the community.

Reflecting on her time at USAO, Brown fondly recalls how she first discovered the university through her older brother. Initially reluctant to follow in his footsteps, she ultimately fell in love with the campus and community after visiting. "The moment I stepped on campus, I knew this was where I was meant to be."

Brown's experience at USAO not only shaped her professionally but also personally. "The skills I gained—particularly in communication and understanding diverse perspectives—have been essential in every aspect of my life."

As she continues to advance in her career, Brown remains focused on making a positive impact. "My most meaningful professional accomplishment is reaching the role of deputy director," she said. "It reflects not only my growth but also my commitment to helping others and contributing to the development of our communities."

For current and future students, Brown offers this advice: "If you’re struggling, remember that it’s okay to face challenges. Stay persistent, seek out support, and embrace the opportunity to learn from difficulties. Every challenge is a step toward achieving your dreams."
