Drover alum since day one: Edgar Tafoya-Acosta

Armed with a biology degree from the University of Science & Arts of Oklahoma, Edgar Tafoya-Acosta ’20 has leveraged his academic background in unique and impactful ways, demonstrating the versatility of his education.
Initially pursuing a career in medicine, Tafoya-Acosta shifted his focus to botany, to align with his passion for plants. Since graduating, Tafoya-Acosta has been working for Moxie Pest Control.
“The interdisciplinary perspective provided by my studies was instrumental in distinguishing my performance in my field,” Tafoya-Acosta said. “Skills such as critical thinking, organizational skills, and a strong work ethic have not only enhanced my efficiency in daily operations but have contributed to the overall success and growth of the company.”
His participation in campus organizations like the USAO Student Government Association and United Hispanic Council, as well as his work at the Student Success Center, helped him develop essential interpersonal skills and cultural competency. These experiences have been invaluable in his post-graduate life.
The guidance and support of Dr. Rachel Jones, dean of the School of Science & Physical Education, were pivotal in shaping his career path. “Without the guidance and support of Dr. Jones, I might have pursued a career path that I would have later regretted,” he said.
During his time as a student, Tafoya-Acosta’s most meaningful accomplishment was receiving the inaugural President John H. Feaver Award for Leadership. “For my leadership qualities and actions to be compared to the level of Dr. Feaver is something that continues to drive my commitment to put my all in any challenge presented in front of me,” he expressed.
Lending advice for current and future students, Tafoya-Acosta emphasized that failure doesn’t have to mean the end. “Failure is the fertilizer of success,” he noted. “Seek help from your peers, go to the library, and lastly be forgiving to yourself.”
Looking to the future, Tafoya-Acosta plans to continue his studies in plant physiology, aiming to further his impact in the field of botany. His journey is a testament to the power of passion, perseverance and the supportive community found at USAO.
