Spring into learning: Free JMOERC workshops

This spring the Jean McLaughlin Outdoor Education & Research Center at the University of Science & Arts of Oklahoma is set to host four exciting free community events.  

For the first time ever, the JMOERC will be providing a shuttle to help transport USAO students, faculty staff and friends of the community between campus and the Habitat.

These events are packed with fun and useful knowledge the whole community can enjoy. Along with being guided by current USAO faculty, some guest appearances at the workshops include Chickasha communities very own, Johnny Trammell, as well as emeritus faculty member Dr. Mike Mather.

 

Gardening 101

  • Saturday, Feb. 22, 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.
  • Participants will join Dr. Rachel Jones in a fun and easy gardening workshop. Participants will learn how to set up and maintain gardens. Karen Jones, local gardening guru, will be the one helping with the gardening workshop.

Easter Basket weaving

  • Friday, April 4, 10 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
  • Participants will join Dr. Rachel Jones to learn and participate in the process of pine needle basket weaving! Attendees will be treated to lunch.

SUNSET wildlife photography & stargazing

  • Friday, April 4, 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.
  • Mike Mather and Dr. Jason Shaw will lead this workshop on identifying and observing wildlife, with a special lesson from Johnny Trammell on proper wildlife photography techniques.

Insect Night

  • Friday, April 18, 8 p.m. – 10 p.m.
  • Participants will join Dr. Jason Shaw and emeritus faculty member Dr. Mike Mather for a night of catching and identifying insects that live at the habitat. Attendees will learn a variety of insect trapping methods and identification. Open to all ages. Attendees are encouraged to wear clothing appropriate for walking outdoors at night!
