USAO to host exciting summer workshops

Join us for an unforgettable summer at the University of Science & Arts of Oklahoma Jean McLaughlin Outdoor Education & Research Center. Register today for one of our workshops that are sure to help you make the most out of the summer season.

Dive into nature with our “Amphibian and Reptile Nights,” where Dr. Jason Shaw, professor of biology, will guide you on an exciting nocturnal walking tour to explore local wildlife. The tours are free, with donations encouraged.

Those wanting to unleash their culinary creativity can register for our “Jams and Jellies” and “Pickling and Preserving” workshops, each for just $25. Participants will get to craft delicious homemade preserves, take home recipes, and enjoy the fruits of your labor.

Get artistic with our “Botanical Printing workshop,” also only $25, where you’ll learn to print beautiful leaves and flowers onto paper and fabric. Master essential techniques like scouring, mordanting and processing and get started on their own botanical printing journey.

June Amphibian & Reptile Night

  • Friday, June 7, 9 p.m. 
  • Attendees will take a walking tour, under the guidance of Dr. Jason Shaw, of the habitat to search for all things that croak and slither through the night. Participants should come with water, flashlights, comfortable shoes, long pants, and ready to walk on uneven terrain.  
  • Cost: FREE (Donations encouraged)

Jams & Jellies

  • Saturday, June 8, 9 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.  
  • Attendees will learn the basics of making jams and jellies from Dr. Jeannette Loutsch and Dr. Rachel Jones. Participants will also receive recipe packages and be able to take home some jars of the good stuff made during the workshop. Of course, taste-tests will be abundant!
  • Cost: $25

Pickling & Preserving

  • Saturday, July 20, 9 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. 
  • Attendees will have the opportunity to learn the basics of pickling and preserving vegetables from Dr. Loutsch. Participants will also receive recipe packages and be able to take home some jars of the good stuff made during the workshop. Light refreshments of the pickled variety will be available. 
  • Cost: $25
