Two graduates from the University of Science & Arts of Oklahoma have concluded their final exhibition, “Viral,” for their Bachelor of Fine Arts.

Zoey Hughes and Gabrielle Guyse both graduated in April. However, the exhibition was delayed to after graduation due to an injury.

“The show title ‘VIRAL.’ equally represents both Gabi and my work,” said Hughes. “My work mainly focuses on the misplaced nostalgia associated with growing up in the digital age and Gabi's work focuses on the macabre nature of the human body, hence the name ‘VIRAL.’ We have both worked really hard for this and have had to overcome many obstacles.”

Hughes work is inspired by the significant role the internet has played in her life since she was young.

“The digital world has grown up beside me,” said Hughes. “I think any knowledge or association with the internet is seen as ‘low brow’ or ‘unintelligent’ in a way, when really it is the most accessible form of communication, entertainment and knowledge. Growing up on the internet has had its highs and its very lows, and with my work I interpret those different feelings towards this influencing force in my life.”

Hughes plans to use the skills she has developed to pursue a career in graphic design and photography. Eventually, her goal is to complete a Master of Fine Arts and work as a curator.

Guyse’s work references vintage medical practice and imagery, paying homage to the taboo aspects of the medical field of the past.

“By alluding to the dark aspects of the medical world's past, in combination with a modern look at mental and physical health, my artwork creates a conversation about how we view health as a whole,” said Guyse. “I emulate morbid themes to ask the viewer to face their own physical and mental health as well as their mortality.”

Guyse plans to build their portfolio, and eventually find a tattoo apprenticeship. They have an upcoming show in the Paseo District in Oklahoma City for the July first Friday event.

USAO holds a BFA exhibition each semester as the capstone project for that degree. Students apply to the program during the second semester of their second year as an art major. Upon acceptance, they develop a single concentration after gaining a wide foundation in all forms of artistic media. For three semesters, students develop cohesive concepts through in-depth research while continuing to add to their technical expertise. The final exhibition formally presents the results of their intense study and research into their chosen form.
