Williams, Esther Phillips 1991

Esther Phillips Williams is best remembered as the creator of the "College Hymn." The 1927 graduate also wrote the words for the pep song, "Cheer OCW." "Esther should be on the Hall of Fame roster if for no other reason than the legacy she left when in 1924 she wrote the "College Hymn" and later the words to the pep song, "Cheer, OCW," which many OCW grads still remember," wrote Tessamae (Walker) Hatfield, 1937 graduate, when she made the nomination. She did post graduate work at the University of Oklahoma. The Chickasha resident used her music education as she served as director of the Episcopal Church Choir and as the church's organist, accompanied soloists in Chickasha, was a collaborator with soloists on compositions and musical arrangements for poems, and played the "College Hymn" for university reunions for many years. Memberships included PEO, Grady County Historical Society, serving both as president, and Junior Social Workers. She was selected as "Woman of the Year" by the Episcopal Guild.
