USAO offers CLEP tests which give college credit hours for taking tests. The exams allow students to test out of classes they are already proficient in.

These tests need to be scheduled at least one week in advance, cost a total of $95.00, and can only be repeated every six months.

On the day of the test you will need two photo IDs, a receipt from the Business Office, social security number, and a form of payment (credit or debit card preferred) for CLEP.

For more information see the USAO CLEP page and their website: clep.collegeboard.org/

DSST stands for Dantes Subject Standardized Tests and, like the CLEP tests, allows students to earn college credit for exams taken online. The test was originally only offered to military personnel but is now open to the public.

These tests must be scheduled one week in advanced, costs $95.00 total, and may only be retaken every six months.

They offer 38 exams in the fields of Business, Humanities, Mathematics, Physical Science, Social Science, and Technology. Additionally study materials are available through Prometrics.

For more information see their website: getcollegecredit.com/

Test Proctors

At the USAO Assessment Office we offer a variety of proctoring services.

For tests for USAO classes, an instructor must schedule with the Assessment Office a week in advance for the test, complete a request form in writing, and provide any non-standard materials (i.e.. not paper, pencils, or calculators).

For non-USAO classes that would like to have they tests proctored, the same guidelines apply. An instructor must complete and return a request form in writing, schedule at least a week in advance, and provide any non-standard materials. In addition a $15.00 fee will be charged, payable to the Business Office, in advanced for the session.

Also see our Proctors page.

Placement Tests (Writing, Math, and Science)

For students who need credit in English/Writing, mathematics, and/or Science to test out of 'zero-level' courses, USAO offers Placement Tests. Each exam takes approximately 45 minutes and is administered online via a multiple choice test.

These short exams may be taken at anytime however making an appointment will ensure availability. There is no cost to take the test however retesting more than twice will require a $5.00 fee.

Study guides are available to students. These are currently only in hard copies available at Troutt 318A. Soon online copies will also be available.

For more information, see the Placement Test page.

Computer Proficiency

In addition to Placement Tests, a 'zero-level' course may be required for computer literacy. To students who would like to test out of this class, USAO offers the Computer Proficiency Test.

This test is administered online and takes approximately one hour to complete. There is no cost for the first two attempts. Three or more attempts require a $5.00 fee.

Currently there are no study guides available in hard copy however online study aids are available through Microsoft. See the below links for additional information. Certain campus faculty and staff also offer assistance in studying--please contact the Assessment Office for details.

Senior Exit Exams

Each USAO student is required to show proficiency in their field before being graduating. This varies between field of study and major. Some departments require students to take an exam at the Assessment Office.

For more information, please see the Exit Exam page.

To keep cost for testing low for the student body at large, USAO charges fees to test takers. These fees are for clerical costs, proctoring, and test credits that the office must pay to continue administratoring the exams.

These fees are:

  • $5.00 Retesting fee for taking 'in-house' exams more than twice
  • $15.00 Proctoring fee for non-USAO classes and non-USAO students*
  • $15.00 Administration fee for CLEP and DSST (does not include cost of test)
  • $35.00 Residual ACT (includes cost of test)

*Please note USAO students and alumni may use proctoring service for free no matter what institution the exam is for.
